Using WordPress 3.5+ Media Uploader in Theme & Plugins

It was a good feeling when there came a solution to use WordPress Old Uploader in themes and plugin using thickbox.

It was something like: (I DON’T LIKE THIS!!)

But now, its time to say goodbye after the introduction of new Uploader in WordPress, and it looks more than just awesome. And the most special of this is new frame uploader is that you can get the actual media ID(including url of different sizes), not the media URL to use to get different image size using WordPress inbuilt image resizers and different image sized you defined from add_image_size function.

First things first:

Enqueue the Javascript Files we need(I am doing it for admin pages for now):

Creating HTML Components

Create an admin page where you want to have a button that will open the new WP 3.5 uploader. A small chunk of my html is:

Now followed by the JavaScript:

NOTE: If your custom admin page isn’t using any kind of media editor or wordpress uploaders, then dont’ forget to call the fucntion wp_enqueue_media(); somewhere in your custom page. (It actually builds some html templates for frames and blah blah!!)

Google Drive Bookmarklet – For Google Drive

Google Drive, a very useful tool/service provided by Google itself is awesome and I recently jumped from Dropbox to Google Drive.

One of very useful feature of Google Drive is, you can easily copy any(atleast most of them) to your Google Drive instantly and download them later in a leisure time or via Google Drive Desktop app.

Grab This – Google Drive Bookmarklet  to your Bookmark Bar. Don’t click it, drag it to your bookmark bar.

What it does?

Well, once you have Dragged the bookmarklet above to your bookmark-bar of your browser, go ahead and click it. A popup would show up asking to put the url.

In the popup above, put the url of ZIP or something you want to copy to your Google Drive. I usually use it to Download ZIP files online. But there are lots of supported extensions available.

Once you put the url, you would get a Google Drive preview window, and near top right, you would find a cute button saying “Add To Drive”. Once you click it, the file will go to your Google Drive instantly and you can download it later.

Have Fun!

Facebook Events Calendar – WordPress Plugin

Can you see a calendar widget right on my right sidebar? Yes, thats it.

See More demo here

Facebook Events Gallery is a Premium WordPress Plugin that would allow you to display your Facebook Events and all the events you have RSVP on facebook as widget or as whole page/post content.

The feature not only limits to how they are used as widget or post/page content, you can use it to display the events from the Facebook Fan Pages you own.

Widget and shortcode integration of the plugin is as easy as counting 1 to 3.  Shortcode generator tool is avaliable on plugin’s Option page.

Caching: Well, whenever it comes for API, its always a good idea to have caching enabled whenever possible or applicable as this boosts the performance of the site and also you may not always have reach to the API or you may any kind of hourly or daily limits for requests to be made.

So, here we have it too. Cache are easily configured and all caching is done on server database and you can pre-define the cache expiry time from plugin options page or even disable the caching.

CSS Customization?

This is the most crucial event when you are getting some plugin and the interface they give aren’t always support your website theme. So what we have here is, this plugin uses the jQuery UI ThemeRoller themes. Go ahead and create your own theme for the plugin. The theme initially used is “Smoothness” with few custom edits.

wp-content/plugins/[PLUGINNAME]/css/theme.css and the images folder with it would be the files you would like to touch if you plan on doing the theme modifications.

Disabling Admin Menu Bar

Its usually annoying that the theme displays so called WordPress Admin Bar on the theme when you never wanted to. In several cases, it just disrupts the theme layout. Mostly when you are a freelancer like me and your client asks “Why isn’t the body background irregular with the header image”, and you will have no option but to call them and ask them to view the website using different browser or device without logging in as admin.

But, it still not late and you can remove them with just few lines of code on your functions.php file.

But if you are using wordpress 3.3+, then you can get that option easily by editing your profile via User>Your Profile  and un-tick “Display Toolbar when viewing website” (Though this isn’t always possible)

Its always a good idea to not to let the annoying admin-bar appear if that’s going to ruin your whole day of work.

I will soon post on how to disable admin-bar on wp-admin too.. that may be helpful.
